The function of Swiss Air-Ambulance

Rega’s legal form as a Foundation does not satisfy the legal requirements made of a professionally-run aviation organisation.

In order to comply with these requirements, in 1974 Rega founded “Swiss Air-Ambulance". This limited company is the operator of Rega’s aircraft and helicopters. The company is non-profit making and is 100% owned by Rega.

Offer of empty-leg capacity

With ambulance flights, patients generally only fly in one direction. This means that the outward or return flights can be sensibly utilised to transport other patients. As a result, air-ambulance flights are more economically viable. The patients, the insurance companies and Rega all benefit from this arrangement.

The Swiss Air-Ambulance website is directed at organisations abroad and is therefore in English.
