Rega submits planning application for new headquarters in Kägiswil (Canton of Obwalden)

Today, 18 December, Rega submitted a planning application for its new headquarters in Kägiswil (Canton of Obwalden) to the Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA). With this step, Rega is advancing the project as planned and creating a key prerequisite for the further development of its future administrative and maintenance location.

The new Rega headquarters is to be constructed at Kägiswil Airport , creating around 200 jobs. It will include the national Air Rescue Center, Rega's administrative units, the headquarters of Swiss Alpine Rescue and the technical maintenance operations for the helicopter fleet. As Rega is required to vacate its current location at Zurich Airport by the end of 2030 at the latest, owing to the construction of a new taxiway around the runway, it is necessary to complete the new infrastructure promptly. The site in central Switzerland offers the spatial, operational and aviation-related conditions that meet Rega’s long-term requirements. The question of where the three Rega ambulance jets and the related administrative units will be stationed in future is still open.

Redevelopment process under way

In order for Rega to build its new headquarters in Kägiswil, the former Kägiswil Airport must be converted into a civilian helicopter airfield. This redevelopment process is being coordinated by the Confederation and has not yet been completed. Submission of the planning application for preliminary review is being coordinated with these overarching tasks and marks an important milestone for the project as a whole.

Planning approval procedure

The planning application is the official application that a project sponsor must submit to FOCA if it wishes to build an aviation facility such as a hangar, an operations centre or a landing site. FOCA assesses the technical, security-related and environmental requirements and coordinates the involvement of the federal, cantonal and municipal authorities and other affected bodies. The planning approval replaces the cantonal building permit and is a prerequisite for completing a project.
